Alice’s Past

Believe it or not, there is a REAL Alice*.  In 2007 she noodled endlessly over a name for her soon-to-be restaurant.  It was hard work – historical? Native American? nautical? – which to choose?   She figured that not many people named Alice actually own restaurants – why not just ‘go for it’  and name it what is was?  And so, a name was born.   Long before the name, Alice knew that she wanted to create a place that had really good food – items you adore but may not have time to make for yourself – food that was quality but not over the top.  She wanted it in a setting that was comfortable but not sloppy.  She wanted to create a place where everyone who showed up would feel comfortable – families, date night couples, business people, people celebrating and, of course,  those who are rounding out their day on the lake.  She wanted a meeting place where the one thing everyone had in common was enjoying themselves and the company of others.   Over a decade later, Alice’s continues to operate with those ideals in mind.   Alice and her team work hard to excite the senses and engage the guests with an excellent setting, delicious food and seamless service.  While Alice doesn’t work daily at the restaurant, she works closely with Chef Sanfilippo, Front of House Manager, Leslie Werner and the Best Bartender in the world, Al Guglielmo.  Together, they strive to make Alice’s is the best establishment it can be.

Alice’s has Sisters

Alice’s is the second of five Lake Hopatcong businesses owned Alice and her husband.  Alice’s restaurant contributes soundly to their corporate mission, which reads:

Alice’s Mission: “Good food, comfortable drink”

Alice’s is a place that celebrates lake living, friends, family and great food and drinks.
  • LAKE LIVING: Located on historic Nolan’s Point, Alice’s offers customers sweeping views of everything great about Lake Hopatcong – sunsets, sailboats, wooden boats, paddle boarders, kayakers, fishermen, and the wild life.
  • FRIENDS AND FAMILY:  Our space was designed with friends and family in mind.  Our main dining room features reclaimed-barn-wood walls, soft lighting, and vaulted wood ceilings.  We play background music to suit the mood of the day and we have a table to suit your mood as well – comfy booth, table for two, or something on our porch.   Whether you want a casual meal with the kids, a date-night destination, or a place to enjoy some time with your friends or business associates Alice’s is the place for you.
  • GREAT FOOD: Alice’s very own Chef Joseph Sanfilippo creates seasonal menus New-American style items which feature only the freshest seasonal ingredients.  Every dish is made-to-order and presented by friendly professional staff.
  • COMFORTABLE DRINK: The Big Fish Lounge is where customers go ‘below deck’ to enjoy a  beer, wine or expertly mixed cocktail.  Big Fish Lounge is the place to catch some live music, catch the game or one of many special events.
 
*Alice Szigethy was born and raised in New York.  She is married to a New Jersey boy with whom she has two children.  Alice has over 30 years of hospitality experience…starting as a shallot peeler and moving her way up to pot washer, prep-cook, butcher, cold station, pastry, short order cook, waitress, hostess, Front of House Manager, Catering Manager, Hotel Room Service Manager, Office Manager and more.  She has worked in a variety of establishments ranging from hotels, inns, theme restaurants, bars and fine dining establishments.  Alice left the hospitality industry for a few years for an office job – being an office manager, admin assistant and bookkeeper.  Alice was excited to reenter the world of hospitality when her husband offered her the opportunity to purchase Alice’s.  Alice is tired.  She and her husband remain pr0-active in growing and fine tuning their businesses on the lake.
